As the back-to-school season approaches, families and students are busy preparing for a fresh academic year. From new laptops and tablets to smartphones and sports equipment, the value of personal belongings heading out the door each morning can quickly add up. Ensuring these items are protected is more important than ever.

Home Contents Insurance explained

As your landlord we cover the buildings insurance for your home but you’re responsible, under the terms of your tenancy, for insuring your contents. It’s always a good idea to shop around for a policy that will give you the cover you need.

Home contents insurance isn’t compulsory, but it’s a good idea to consider what a policy would cover you for.  Home contents insurance can help protect your belongings from risks like fire, theft, water damage, and many more household risks, giving you peace of mind.

We have teamed up with Thistle Tenant Risks, to offer the My Home Contents Insurance Scheme. The scheme is designed specifically for residents in social housing, and all our residents are eligible to apply.

Why Protection Matters

Accidents happen – whether it’s a dropped tablet in the classroom, a misplaced phone on the bus, or a stolen backpack during after-school activities. Replacing these items can be costly and stressful, especially at the start of a new school year.

Did you know?

For an additional premium, the My Home Contents Insurance Scheme offers optional Personal Possessions cover, which insures items inside your home and temporarily (for up to 60 consecutive days) anywhere in the world against loss, theft or damage.

Please note:

  • Wear and tear is not covered, and
  • Theft or attempted theft from an unattended vehicle is excluded unless all doors, windows, and sunroofs are securely closed and locked.

You can choose a Personal Possessions sum insured of £1,000, £2,000, or £3,000. For any single claim, the insurer will not pay more than 50% of the Personal Possessions sum insured selected.

Student’s personal belongings

The My Home scheme also includes cover (up to £5,000) for loss or damage caused by fire, theft, malicious damage, storms, floods, and water leaks while a member of your family is living away from home at college or university.

Please note: Theft is excluded unless there is evidence of force or violence used to enter or exit the building your family member is living in.

Terms, conditions, limits and exclusions apply.  For more information about our policy, please refer to the Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) and Policy Wording which is available at www.thistlemyhome.co.uk or by contacting the My Home team on the details below.
