Free childcare hours are expanding from September 2025

Working parents with children from nine-months-old up to school age are now able to get 30 hours of free childcare a week during term time. This is a big change that could help families save money and make it easier for parents to return to work.

What has changed

  • From September 2025, eligible working parents with children aged from nine-months to school age will be able to access 30 hours per week of free early education and childcare.
  • Previously, the 30 hours were only available for three- and four-year-olds. The offer has been phased in since April 2024 for 2-year-olds, and from September 2024 for children from nine months with 15 free hours. Now, the full 30 hours will apply from nine months onwards.
  • The entitlement is usually for 38 weeks a year (school term time). Some providers may allow you to “stretch” the hours over more weeks, giving fewer hours per week.

What this means for parents

  • Lower costs: With more free hours available, families should see a big reduction in childcare bills, especially for younger children under two.
  • More flexibility to work: This change may make it possible for parents who are currently not working, or working fewer hours, to return to or increase work.
  • Check locally: Availability depends on registered providers. Some nurseries or childminders may not offer stretched hours, and extra costs (meals, nappies, trips) are not covered.

To qualify for the 30 free hours, parents must meet certain conditions:
