Do you know the value of your home contents?

As your landlord we cover the buildings insurance for your home but you’re responsible, under the terms of your tenancy, for insuring your contents. It’s always a good idea to shop around for a policy that will give you the cover you need.

Home contents insurance isn’t compulsory, but it’s a good idea to consider what a policy would cover you for.  Home contents insurance can help protect your belongings from risks like fire, theft, water damage, and many more household risks, giving you peace of mind.

We have teamed up with Thistle Tenant Risks, to offer the My Home Contents Insurance Scheme. The scheme is designed specifically for residents in social housing, and all our residents are eligible to apply.

New year, fresh start.

If you’re reviewing your existing home contents insurance, or considering a new policy, take some time to total up the value of your home contents. Most of us underestimate what we own – furniture, clothing, tech, and more. A quick room-by-room tally helps you choose the right level of cover.

About the My Home Contents Insurance Scheme

  • Designed for tenants and residents in social and affordable housing.
  • Covers loss or damage caused by insured events such as fire, theft, and flood.
  • Includes tenant’s liability to the landlord’s fixtures and fittings (limit: up to 35% of your contents cover amount-the “contents sum insured”-for damage you are legally liable for as a tenant).
  • Important: Theft and tenants’ liability cover do not apply if the home is unoccupied for more than 60 days in a row or if the home is unfurnished.
  • Low minimum sums insured-so you only pay for the cover you need.

How to estimate your sum insured

  • List your belongings and use the full “as new” replacement cost.
  • Go room by room, including items in drawers and cupboards.
  • Don’t forget hallways, lofts, cellars and outbuildings.

Choosing the right sum insured

Selecting an appropriate sum insured is essential. If your sum insured is too low (underinsurance), any claim payment may be reduced proportionately.

Keep your cover up to date

Review your contents cover amount at renewal and whenever your circumstances change (e.g., major purchases) You can change your cover at any time; your premium will be adjusted from the date of the change.

Terms, conditions, limits and exclusions apply.  For more information about our policy, please refer to the Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) and Policy Wording which is available at www.thistlemyhome.co.uk or by contacting us using the details below.
