Leaving your TCH home

We’re here to support residents throughout their time with Town & Country Housing, including when they decide to move out of their home.
Moving home can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. Knowing what to expect and how to prepare can make the process much smoother and help you avoid stress, delays, or unexpected charges.
Once you tell us that you are planning to move out, our teams will provide you with all the information you need to successfully complete your move, including our end of tenancy form.
In most cases we ask for four weeks’ notice to end a tenancy, although this can be reduced to two weeks where residents are moving to a nursing home, or have sadly passed away.
Simple steps

With long waiting lists for social housing, we’re keen to re-let your home to a new resident as soon as possible. There are some simple steps that you can take to help us achieve this:
- Please clear all your belongings
- Before we can re-let your home it will need to be empty. If items are left behind, including rubbish, you will be charged for clearance and disposal
- Make sure your home is clean and tidy for the new resident
- You don’t usually need professional cleaners, but the home should be to a reasonable, lived‑in standard
- Carry out small repairs that you’re responsible for, such as filling small nail or screw holes or repairing damage caused by pets
- If you’ve changed any of the standard fixtures or fittings, such as light fittings or doors, please re-install the original items
During your notice period we’ll contact you to arrange an inspection of your home. This gives both sides the chance to discuss arrangements and steps that need completing before you move out. This meeting may be in person or by video call.
As well as delaying someone new from moving in, the cost of clearing and repairing properties means that we have less money to invest in our homes and services for residents. By following the steps above, you can make a positive difference to all Town & Country Housing residents.
Forward planning

Ending a tenancy doesn’t have to be stressful. Planning ahead, asking questions, and understanding your responsibilities can help you leave your home on good terms and make your next move easier.
If you’re unsure about anything, we’re here to help – don’t hesitate to get in touch – find out how here.
